Grab bars are short, rigid fixtures mounted in specific locations to provide a stable hold during brief, high-effort tasks. Handrails, by contrast, are continuous fixtures designed to be held while moving. Their shape, height, and graspability are governed by building codes precisely because they must serve a dynamic, ongoing function.

Where Each Fixture Belongs — and Why Placement Matters

Correct placement is as important as choosing the right fixture. A grab bar installed where a handrail is needed — or vice versa — does not simply underperform; it can actively mislead a person about the support available and increase fall risk.

Installation: What Both Fixtures Require to Actually Work

Standard drywall alone cannot support repeated body-weight loading. For handrails: Brackets must be anchored into studs or masonry. The rail itself must be graspable in cross-section — typically 1.25 to 2 inches in diameter — so a hand can fully wrap around it. Flat-topped decorative rails common in older homes often do not meet this standard.
