Why Microchip Myths Persist
Pet microchipping has been available for decades, yet misconceptions about how it works remain surprisingly common. For older adults who are new to the technology — or who got a pet microchipped years ago and haven't thought about it since — these misunderstandings can create a false sense of security or unnecessary hesitation.

Myth
A microchip works like a GPS tracker and can show me where my pet is right now.
Fact
A microchip is a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) device with no battery and no location capability whatsoever.
This is the most widespread microchip misconception. A microchip contains only a unique identification number — nothing more. It has no power source and cannot transmit any signal on its own. It only responds when a compatible scanner is held within a few inches of the chip. If your pet goes missing, the chip cannot help you find them; it can only help a shelter or veterinarian identify them after they have been found. Once the chip is implanted, my pet is fully protected and there's nothing else to do.
Fact
Implanting the chip is only the first step — registering it in a national database with your current contact details is what actually makes it useful.
A microchip that is not registered is essentially useless for reuniting you with a lost pet. When a shelter or veterinarian scans a found animal, they look up the chip number in one or more registries to find the owner's contact information. If the number isn't in a registry — or if your phone number or address has changed since you registered — the chip provides no path back to you. Registration is typically done online and may involve a one-time or annual fee depending on the registry you choose.
Myth
Microchip implantation is painful and risky for the animal.
Fact
The procedure is brief, comparable to a routine vaccination, and serious complications are extremely rare.
The microchip — about the size of a grain of rice — is injected under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades, using a sterile needle. Most animals show little to no reaction beyond the momentary sensation of the injection. Veterinary and animal welfare organizations widely regard the procedure as safe. Rare reports of chip migration (the chip shifting slightly under the skin) exist, but this does not affect how the chip functions when scanned.
Myth
All microchip scanners can read all chips, so any shelter can identify my pet.
Fact
Different chips operate on different radio frequencies, and not all scanners are compatible with all chip types — though universal scanners are now widely available.
Microchips used in the United States operate primarily at 125 kHz and 134.2 kHz frequencies. Older scanners may not detect all frequency types. However, most shelters and veterinary offices now use forward- or universal-reading scanners that can detect chips across common frequencies. When your pet is microchipped, ask your veterinarian to confirm the chip frequency and test it with their scanner on that same visit so you know it is detectable.
Myth
A microchip is a substitute for an ID tag on my pet's collar.
Fact
Microchips and ID tags serve different purposes and work best together — one is not a replacement for the other.
An ID tag on a collar is immediately visible to anyone who finds your pet — a neighbor, a passerby, or a good Samaritan who may never take the animal to a shelter. A microchip requires a scanner to be read and assumes the finder will bring the pet to a facility equipped with one. Tags can fall off or become unreadable over time, and collars can slip. Using both provides layered protection: the tag for quick identification in everyday situations, the microchip as a permanent backup that cannot be lost or removed.
